Description

Frabosana is a medium-sized sheep with Roman nose. The very coarse wool of the Frabosana is yellowish, with various yellowisch-brown spots ohn head and on the extremities. Rams present spiral horns closed to the head. The horns of the ewes are sickle-shaped. The type Raoschina ist characterised by its larger built and higher milk performance. Extremities are fine, head, belly and legs do not present wool.

General and History

Frabosana is an Alpine sheep that belongs to the Semi lop Eared Group. Originally, the breed was divided in two types: the Frabosana type and the slightly lager Roaschina type.

Distribution in the past and today

The breed is found in Cuneo and Torino Provinces in different valleys, in the valleys of Monregalesi and the Ligurian Alps, and in the surroundings of Alessandrino.

During the summer the animals graze pastures at high altitudes, where they are also milked During the winter is common to house animals and let them graze changing pastures in the plains.

Breeding tries to improve the milk yield and the fertility with more twin births.

Milk yield of the Frabosana is approx. 200kg per ewe. The ewes mature very early. They lamb once a year with approx. 1,1 to 1,3 lambs per birth.

Withers height: 80-90cm (m), 74-80cm (w)
Lambing percentage: 110-130%

Processing and products

A special cheese “Sola” is produced as regional product.
