Varesina (I)
Description
Varesina conforms to the Bergamasca sheep. The animals are of medium size and medium weight. Wool, head and extremities are unicoloured white, the wool is of medium length and half-closed. The long head with Roman nose is more pronounced for rams than for females. Both sexes are polled. Lop ears are broad and long.
General and History
Varesina is an autochthon breed, which has probably common origins with Bergamasca sheep.
Distribution in the past and today
It is found in Lombardy, in the Province of Varese, in the communities of Travedono and Biandronno.
Utilization
Varesina are bred with focus on button and wool production.
Keeping
Traditionally, animals are kept in transhumance systems throughout the year. During wintertime, small amounts of hay are fed.

Fleece weight: 3.5kg (m), 2.5-3.0kg (w)
