Description

In the last still operating ship mill Babičev mlin of the Alps, in Slovenian Verzej, buckwheat, barley and maize are milled. Formerly water-powered mills were not tied to one place along rivers (Mur, Rhine, Danube etc.), since water levels were highly variable. Ship mills are for example recorded on the Alpine Rhine between Lake Constance and Chur in the middle 15th-19th century. The Babičev mlin ship mill is the only preserved ship mill and belongs to the Pannonian type, where only the driving mechanism is on the ship and mechanical belts transfer force to the actual mill on the shore. Other mills, such as the reconstructed Murek mill, were constructed from wood following the principle of a house boat: The entire mill and milling machinery including the driving machinery - the water wheel which reminds people of the wheel of a steamship, is constructed on a floating platform (pontoon)
